In this video, a group of 3rd graders are provided with a task that informally introduces them to the concept of the Commutative Property of Multiplication. Students are tasked with using only one color rod (one set length of rods) to cover a 7 by 8 array of 1cm dots. The majority of students either use eight black rods (7cm lengths) or seven brown rods (8cm lengths).
